First of all, I have no idea why these hikers would be detained in the first place. You accidentally crossed the border on a hike and it’s obvious that you aren’t spies? Great, go back over. Bye. Problem solved. There’s no reason these people should have been detained since July fucking 31st. Also, where’s America on this? Seriously, if I was in a position of power, I would pull whoever was responsible for the detaining aside and go, “Hey buddy, look at Iraq right now. That’s us trying to help. Imagine if we were actually trying to be destructive!” Then I would blankly stare into his eyes for a few moments, uneasily lingering. Then, I would slowly nod my head once, as if to say, “Don’t tread on me, bitch.” USA! USA!

I haven’t had late-night bacon in years. Name/ Tumblr: Jason/ Prolefeed
Comment: Which of Devo’s albums is your favorite, and why? Also, what would you call Devo in general terms? Simply a talented post-punk or synthpop band? An artistic statement? A philosophy with musical accompaniment?

I loved receiving this question, if only for the fact that it gave me new incentive to listen to all of my Devo songs over again. My favorite Devo album would have to be their first, “Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!” One could probably make compelling arguments for their next couple of albums as well, but what stands out in my mind about “Are We Not Men?” is that Devo’s music isn’t totally enveloped in synths yet. The guitar work is exceptional, as is evident in “Gut Feeling (Slap Your Mammy)”. There are no weak tracks on the album, just good ones and better ones.

Also, Devo’s subversive sarcasm is on full display here, and I think that’s especially important to note since this is their first album we’re discussing. Towards the end of their discography, the sarcasm and intelligent social commentary faded into the background.

My most basic description of Devo would simply be: “new wave” band. Of course, fans like you and I know that they are much more than just another synth-pop band. They’re a statement, uniquely absurd and satirical. I wish I could better formulate my thoughts on what Devo is, but I can’t think of an all-encompassing definition. I have great respect for Devo for what they’ve done in the music scene.

Formspring Response #1

Three months ago, I created one of those new-fangled Formspring forms where people could tell me basically anything they wanted. Four people actually took the time to write me something, and I (being the remarkably lazy person that I am) am only now getting around to replying to them. If you have something you’d like to say to me, anonymous-or-otherwise, my Formspring is here. Now, time to respond to the first comment!

Name: Anonymous
Comment: i think youre an awesome kid and i wish we had hung out more a few years ago in high school and that you werent so freakin busy all the time, but i must say im glad we said screw you to tops and went to pacos haha

Ah, yes. This comment comes from someone who used to be a rather close friend of mine. However, despite the fact that he is currently unemployed and not going to school, he seems to have lost time to hang out with me. It makes absolutely no sense to me. We’re all going to college of our own free will, right? It isn’t government mandated. Therefore, though it is expected for us to go to class, should we really be punished for not attending?

Take, for example, me today. My printer was having trouble, so I was out the door late. Being a commuter, I had a fifteen minute drive to get to class. I managed to only be five minutes late. In fact, the attendance sheet was still in circulation (though on the far side of the room). I was in the room for 90% of class, and I had missed nothing of importance. Still, my professor refused to let me sign the attendance sheet, as I was technically late. He should be pleased that I came to class, as missing the first five minutes is never a big deal. Instead, he felt the need to punish me for breaking an arbitrary rule by the slightest of margins. Thanks, prof, you’re a douche.

My Top 5 Artists (Week Ending 2009-10-11)

My Top 5 Artists (Week Ending 2009-10-11):

More dangerous than cell phones, in my opinion.
Jeff: What about handjobs?
Larry: Any kind of 'job' is dangerous.
Jeff: It has to affect the driver. I'll admit that.
Larry: It should be illegal, frankly. And, by the way, why do they call it a 'job'? Because it's so hard? What, it's a lot of work?
Jeff: You're tugging, sucking... It's a lot of work. I wouldn't want to do it.
Larry: It is a job.
