Title: You Were the King, Now You’re Unconscious

Note: I’m not sure how I feel about Atreyu’s newest album, “Congregation of the Damned”, yet. It isn’t as over-produced and poppy as “Lead Sails Paper Anchor”, but the band is deluding themselves if they think they’ve gone back to the glory days of “The Curse”. What we have here is mostly catchy arena rock with some screaming and loud, muddy bass. Still, despite its faults, the album does have its moments, this song being one of them. Man, how I love the intro.

Iran to charge 3 American hikers with espionage:

Am I the only person who finds this to be completely ridiculous? First of all, I have no idea why these hikers would be detained in the first place. You accidentally crossed the border on a hike and it’s obvious that you aren’t spies? Great, go back over. Bye. Problem solved. There’s no reason these people should have been detained since July fucking 31st. Also, where’s America on this? Seriously, if I was in a position of power, I would pull whoever was responsible for the detaining aside and go, “Hey buddy, look at Iraq right now. That’s us trying to help. Imagine if we were actually trying to be destructive!” Then I would blankly stare into his eyes for a few moments, uneasily lingering. Then, I would slowly nod my head once, as if to say, “Don’t tread on me, bitch.” USA! USA!

Comment: Which of Devo’s albums is your favorite, and why? Also, what would you call Devo in general terms? Simply a talented post-punk or synthpop band? An artistic statement? A philosophy with musical accompaniment?

I loved receiving this question, if only for the fact that it gave me new incentive to listen to all of my Devo songs over again. My favorite Devo album would have to be their first, “Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!” One could probably make compelling arguments for their next couple of albums as well, but what stands out in my mind about “Are We Not Men?” is that Devo’s music isn’t totally enveloped in synths yet. The guitar work is exceptional, as is evident in “Gut Feeling (Slap Your Mammy)”. There are no weak tracks on the album, just good ones and better ones.

Also, Devo’s subversive sarcasm is on full display here, and I think that’s especially important to note since this is their first album we’re discussing. Towards the end of their discography, the sarcasm and intelligent social commentary faded into the background.

My most basic description of Devo would simply be: “new wave” band. Of course, fans like you and I know that they are much more than just another synth-pop band. They’re a statement, uniquely absurd and satirical. I wish I could better formulate my thoughts on what Devo is, but I can’t think of an all-encompassing definition. I have great respect for Devo for what they’ve done in the music scene.

Ah, yes. This comment comes from someone who used to be a rather close friend of mine. However, despite the fact that he is currently unemployed and not going to school, he seems to have lost time to hang out with me. Not exactly a big loss.
